Overview
After it was discontinued back in 2023, the Jeep Cherokee now returns in an all-new generation for 2026: larger, more modern and, most likely, electrified. Manufactured in Mexico, this midsize SUV is expected to offer a 4xe plug-in hybrid trim, a modernized design, and advanced technologies inspired by the Grand Cherokee. The model promises a more energy-efficient drive, improved ergonomics, and superior comfort. It will also retain well-known trims such as the Trailhawk, while showcasing a more refined orientation. Official release is anticipated for the end of 2025 in Canada, at a competitive price yet to be confirmed.

Powertrain and Performance of the New Cherokee
In 2023, the Jeep Cherokee offered two efficient powertrain options:
- 2.0 L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produced 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.
- 3.2 L V6 engine that delivered 271 horsepower and 239 lb-ft of torque.
It is quite possible that the 2.0 L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine will be carried over to the 2026 model, although this has not yet been confirmed by the manufacturer. This powertrain remains a favourite, since it remains quicker than the V6.
However, what appears to be unfolding at the Toluca plant, approximately 50 km west of Mexico City, is the introduction of a hybrid engine that fits in with Jeep’s current electrification strategy.
The information provided indicates that a 1.6 L turbo hybrid engine would be paired with an electric motor specifically designed to optimize the performance and efficiency of the new Jeep.
In short, the sixth-generation SUV would predominantly be a 4xe model, as seen, for example, on the current Jeep Wrangler, which ensures a 100% electric range of 42 km. This hybrid powertrain (presumably a PHEV) would be complemented by a pioneering three-speed automatic transmission — optimized for hybrid vehicles of this size.
One thing is certain: Jeep confirms that the new Cherokee, arriving by the end of the year at your Jeep dealership in Amos, in Abitibi near Val-d'Or, Rouyn-Noranda and La Sarre, will be both high-performing and energy-efficient. This means you might be saving big at the gas station.
Towing Capacity and Cargo Space
In 2023, when equipped with the 2.0 L turbo engine, the Jeep Cherokee had a towing capacity of up to 4,000 lb. With the V6 engine, it could tow up to 4,500 lb.
We do not yet know the specifications for 2026, but for reference, the Jeep Grand Cherokee can tow up to 6,000 lb. when equipped with the 2.0 L turbo hybrid engine.
The new Jeep Cherokee, however, equipped with a 1.6 L turbo hybrid engine may have a lower towing capacity, albeit still competitive, as we have seen with the outgoing model.
Furthermore, the last generation of the Jeep Cherokee offered cargo space ranging from 731 L to 1,549 L. Rumours have it that the new-generation Cherokee will be roomier than the 2023 version.
Technology and Safety Systems
Expect a modern and tech-savvy Jeep. Here is what may be found aboard the 2026 Cherokee.
Infotainment Technologies
Based on what equips other Jeep vehicles, the new SUV should offer the following:
- High-resolution 10.25-inch touch screen
- Premium Alpine sound system, as featured in the Jeep Grand Cherokee
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Wireless charger
- Uconnect 5
- Integrated navigation system
- Bluetooth hands-free
- Voice recognition
- And more
Active Safety Systems
Jeep vehicles are extremely safe, and the new 2026 Cherokee is no exception to this golden rule. Just like in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, we can logically expect to take advantage of the following features:
- Rear occupant reminder
- Assistance in intersections
- Autonomous lane changes
- Adaptive cruise control
- Traffic sign recognition with intelligent speed limiter
- Trailer sway control system
- Hill descent control
- And more
2026 Cherokee: Dimensions
The new model will be larger than the outgoing version. Several sources have indicated that it would be a midsize SUV, although it is important to note that it will be smaller than the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which also belongs to this category.
In 2023, the Jeep Cherokee measured 4,645 mm in length. Today, the Jeep Grand Cherokee measures 4,915 mm. Logically, one can expect something in between.
This “in between” might suggest a Jeep with a length of more than 4,800 mm, but not exceeding 4,900 mm. If that is the case, it would align perfectly with the Jeep Wagoneer S, which boasts the following dimensions:
- Wheelbase : 2,870 mm
- Length : 4,886 mm
- Width : 1,900 mm
- Height : 1,645 mm
2026 Cherokee: Interior and Exterior Design
With slightly increased dimensions, the new design of the 2026 Jeep Cherokee promises more refinement, stylized LED headlamps, rectangular taillights, a well-integrated modern radiator grille, and a more engaging style.
Make no mistake; the sixth-generation Cherokee will not stray from the iconic seven-slot DNA. However, it will be markedly different from the previous generation.
Inside, you can expect comfort and technology to take centre stage. Anticipate wraparound seats, a user-friendly interior, additional storage spaces, and a quiet ride.
Finally, you can expect to see the Sport, North, Limited and undoubtedly the Trailhawk trim for off-road driving. This trim may also adopt stylistic elements from other current Trailhawk trims.
In conclusion, much is happening with Jeep, as the manufacturer never ceases to innovate.
